Dance and Ball Tradition in Vienna

Already in the 17th century the balls at the court of the Habsburg family played an important role in social life and politics as well. Following th example of the French Sun King Louis XIV those balls werde also a place where secret plots werde made dn where the rulers and noble families presented their private lives in public: marriages werde arranged, engagements were announced and diplomatic alliances werde forced. In the 19th century the educated classes make that tradition their own. In the suburbs new forms of carnival celebrations, the so-called Gschnas, are created. The Republic continues that tradition, inventing new balls. Nowadays about 300 balls take place in Vienna during the ball season, e.g. the Opera Ball, the Ball of the Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ball of Hietzing´s Citizens, the Officers´Ball, the Farners Union Ball, the Bakers´Ball, the Life Ball. Each social group, institution and interest group organizes their own balls. The guided walking tour shows you the most beautiful ball locations, explains the ball tradition and gives insight into typical ballroom dances and modern forms of balls like Gschnas.
