Jewish Vienna in the Maelstrom of History |
 |
There have been Jewish communities in Vienna since the 13th century. This tour gives an overview over the eventful and often very tragic Jewish history of the city. We talk about Jewish life in the city from its earliest beginnings, about the medieval synagogue as well as the early 19th-century City Tempel in Seitenstettengasse, about the destruction of Vienna's Jewish community in the Shoah, and its re-birth. This tour takes in the Gestapo Memorial, the Jewish Textile Quarter around Rudofsplatz, the Austrian Documentation Archive and the Holocaust Memorial on Judenplatz. After the tour you may visit the excavations of the medieval Or-Saruah Synagogue and the Art Forum of painter and Holocaust victim Adolf Frankl.
